Does your hair look light or medium blonde? Does it have grey strands and natural grey highlights? Do you see red and orange undertones in your hair? Well, you can easily fix all these problems if you go with ash blonde hair dyes.

“Light ash blonde hair color is a whiter shade of blonde that has an ashy, or gray, tint. It could be described as cool platinum, and looks best on lighter complexions with lighter eye colors. Lady Gaga has sported this hue, which can be achieved on lighter natural hair colors through balayage, or all-over color on those with darker natural hair colors.”

With the right choice of the best light ash blonde hair color, you will need just a single application that will last long. All you will need is to do root-retouch to cover your natural hair color as it grows.

How to Get Ash Blonde Hair (from Black, Orange, Yellow, Brown Hair)

How do you get ash blonde hair from orange, yellow, from black, brown or red hair? Can you get light ash blonde after bleaching hair? Is it possible to get super ashy blonde without bleach at home? Well, these are all the kind of questions I have been getting lately. As I had said earlier, one of the primary purposes of going ashy blonde, or sometimes dirty blonde is to get rid of the brassy tones in your hair. Therefore, with the right procedure and a good product, you can easily get it at home without green.

Some people simply bleach dark hair and also brown hair to get some white or simply make their hair blonde. Well, if you bleach your hair, you will definitely get the best results. Bleached hair will leave your dye looking vibrant, natural and shiny since there will be no base colors interfering with it. In addition to this, you won’t have problems of fading or pigment interfering with your new outlook. However, the only problem with this is that color-retouching on the newly grown roots will not work so perfectly to the shade you want unless you bleach them too. That said, here’s a quick procedure on how to get ash blonde hair at home for people with medium to dark brown hair.

  1. Start off with a level 20 peroxide and then use a regular bleaching color
  2. Mix one part of bleaching powder and one part the peroxide
  3. Mix thoroughly to ensure you get rid of all the lumps in the mixture
  4. When the mixture becomes a semi-thick consistency, use your applicator brush to apply the mixture to the roots
  5. Ensure you just do the roots only and maintain consistency
  6. Tie up your hair nicely to prevent the mixture from bleaching the tips
  7. Wear a cap and allow to sit for an hour in order to get the desired level of blonde without damaging your hair
  8. Wash your hair and dry it up
  9. Go ahead and use a level 10 with dyes in order to place the color. You can use a light ash blonde
  10. Mix the dye in one part and the second part the peroxide
  11. Whip to get a semi-thick consistency
  12. Repeat the steps 3-8 above with this mixture
  13. Do the last steps in the shower
  14. Use a purple semi-permanent dye (this acts as a toning dye). This will help you get the extra ashy blonde color to your hair
  15. Mix it with a conditioner because you don’t want to get a purple tint to your hair. After applying, you will get the perfect ash blonde hair color that is suitable for you.

Here’s a video to help you with the steps (courtesy of BiiBiiBeauty on YouTube – from which the procedure above was adapted). Note: There are many methods of doing this, and this is just one of them.

Ash Blonde Hair Dye on Black Hair and Brown Hair

How would light ash blonde look on dark hair and brown hair? Can you go from black to blonde or from dark brown hair to ashy blonde? Well you can and the best way to go blonde for people with black and brown hair is by choosing to settle on either medium or dark ash blonde. This is more of a gradual and managed shift that will work well for brunettes.

  • If you have black hair or brown hair, consider bleaching your hair first before dyeing it ash blonde
  • The process of changing your hair color will be best managed at the salon than at home even though you can buy cheap drugstore blonde hair dyes.

Ash Blonde Hair Dye on Red Hair

If you are a fan of DIY hair dyeing at home, then you might be familiar with ash blonde hair dye on red hair, or turning hair red. The main reason for using such a dye is to remove the brassy look that your hair might be coming with naturally, or if you have used too much warm colors for a long time. If you keep having this problem, go to the salon to have it fixed without damaging your hair. That said, you can use this ash blonde on red hair (if you are a redhead) too and turn it to the blonde you like.

Something worth noting with ash hair color is that you are likely to get a greenish tinge that you might not like at all. This is common with girls who swim a lot especially in swimming pools that are chemically treated. Your hair will oxidize from the absorption of the chemical treatments and you will end up with the green tinge. So, how do you fix this?

Bella Capelli Hairstyles recommends that you get rid of the green tinge using a “color shampoo with a gold (warm color tone) and not an ash color.” As a precaution, Chlorine is something you should avoid when you color your hair blonde.

10 Amazing Facts about Blonde Hair

  1. I’m a african american 58yrs. old my original hair color is dark brown, my skin is medium brown more like Kerry Washington will a strawberry blonde color look good on me ?

  2. I’ve been trying to get a cool toned ash light blonde colour for years now. My colourist hasn’t found it yet. Her salon uses Goldwell, and we use the Ash toned colour with just a little tad of the N, and my hair still comes out gold. Level 9. She said it always will do that because of the natural colour of my ashy light brown hair. It pulls red for some reason. We tone it so its okay for a while, but then the gold comes back. She ordered in Schwarzkopf just for me, but it turned out kinda muddy and slightly red. Even worse than Goldwell. What’s the best line to use to get light ashy blonde cool toned hair?

    1. If she uses goldwell and you want to be more ashy, tell her to use the SB series in topchic. 15mls of 8SB and 15mls of 9N you will find it comes out ashier.

  3. I have green hazel eyes and my skin tends to look yellow peach during the winter and red or tan during summer. My natural hair is medium brown with gold and red undertones. I need a change because recently my skin looks very red and so does my hair so I’ve been thinking about a cool tone to counteract the red of the skin and brighten my eyes. What is the right shade for me?

  4. To get a true ash blonde you will need to lift your hair up to a level 9 or 10. Otherwise the cool will come out too warm. Then tone with a color such as 10a.

  5. My natural hair is dark brown. I coloured it with Solfine brand neutral dark blonde 7N with 30% peroxide, which turned it red orange. A week later I went to Sally’s and was advised to use One n Only light ash blonde 8A with 20% peroxide, and my hair turned more brassy! It’s been three weeks since I last coloured. Yesterday I used a purple blue shampoo I bought from Shoppers and it cut the brassiness slightly but my hair is nowhere near an ash blonde color, it’s more of a light brown with a red/auburn tone. Can you please offer me some advice of what to do to get to a medium ash brown with good grey coverage? Thanks a million!
P.S. I have dry fine hair so I’m too scared to bleach,

    1. Hello Nawida, it looks as your main issue is brassiness and if you fail to correct it, it will still show through no matter what type of hair dye you choose. Have you tried using any toner? Wella’s Pale Ash blonde T-14 should work for you and it’s not too harsh on the hair and scalp, if you are worrying about any possible damage. Use one part of the toner and two parts of 20 vol. developer and leave on your hair for 15-20 minutes. If you wash it off with a purple based shampoo that will help correct any remaining brassiness further, but this time make sure you leave the purple shampoo on your hair for at least two minutes before washing out. This process should neutralize any brassiness and get you a nice light brown/dark ash blonde shade. Now, if you want to a lighter blonde shade, dye your hair again using a 30 vol. developer this time so it lifts better and then do the toner step as directed. Currently, this is the only alternative method to getting an ash blonde shade gradually without using any strong bleach.

  6. Surprisingly, Revlon Colosilk dark ash blonde has been able to color my medium brown hair without bleaching, much more accurately than other brands. However, to avoid any dark spots or unwanted red areas, bleach just past red/orange (not a trace left).Dark yellow is ok. Then, you can pretty much use Medium or Dark Ash blonde. In fact, as long as your hair is lightened to yellow with NO orange left, L’Oreal Excellence 8 1/2 A, Champagne Blonde, actually comes out looking almost platinum. I find all L’Oreal blonde brands are very accurate when used on hair bleached to yellow. If you leave a few too many brassy tones, Preference 8A is a WONDER fix. Excellence doesn’t drip & has the best gray coverage, where as preference has more color selection. But, don’t try L’oreal on any shade of brown, regardless of what the box says, without bleaching to at least a bright yellow. Colorsilk dark ash should actually be pretty accurate on light, and sometime medium brown hair even without bleaching. But, like must brunettes, very few of us don’t have multi-tonal hair, so while your mostly light brown hair will come out perfect, that dark brown underneath in the back will not so much!

  7. I have found the Nice n’ Easy Natural Light Ash Blonde 102 is the perfect shade for me. I have gold/red tones to my dark blonde hair and the Nice n Easy gets rid of them completely. It also really conditions my hair better than it was before. It is a very consisent color, and always comes out the same on me, unlike some other brands I have tried. It is a believable ash, too, not too gray or drab-looking.

    1. Hi Poetzsch. Thanks for sharing your review with us and others. Yes that is really a great hair dye for home use and it works for most people with no issues. If anyone is looking for a natural looking and glossy ash blonde shade, this is the shade to go.

I like dark roots and light ends but it’s been very difficult to get to that. I have lines of demarcation which looks horrible. I am looking to fix my roots backs to dark brown or an ash dark brown so they can blend in slowly with my with my ends .please help I need recommendations .

  11. Hi I’ve dyes my hair and it’s gone a white blonde but roots have a yellow tinge what colour can I use to get rid of yellow tinge and not make my hair so white hope somebody can help

  13. Hi. I am normally a level 7 and was coloring a Redken 6NA. I removed the hair color and bleached twice and toned with T14 and T18 combined. It is pretty light but still has some slight brass on the ends since I tried to spare my ends the second bleach. I have decided it is too solid of a color and would like more dimension without being too white/silver and definitely not gold. If I put a filler on my hair can I color it to a light or medium ash? Can I mix two colors together? Will my hair go green and if so what should I do if it does? If the color has brass in it after I am done can I still use a toner and which is better and ash toner or beige? Also what level is Reid Witherspoons color in the photo in this article? The colors I have been looking at are newer pictures of Dana Perino on Fox news and Monica Crowley. I am unsure what color and levels they would be and how to get that color. Thanks for your help.

  14. Hello, what will happen if i put L’oreal 9.1 on my auburn-red hair? I have removed built up black using Colour remover, and its just not lifting anymore so i’m wondering if i have to bleach or strip it to go lighter first, if i want to make it a light ash brown, or will 9.1 remove the red at least?
